OK so it may not be the Mayan Riviera, but we have access to full spectrum sunlight everyday, even when it’s cloudy and cold! Vitamin D is a hormone that helps to enhance immune function.

Being outside for 20-30 minutes per day allowing the sunlight to touch a small area of your skin such as face, arms or hands activates Vitamin D. Did you know that Vitamin D is a hormone that helps to enhance immune function? Vitamin D can modulate the innate and adaptive immune responses.

Deficiency in vitamin D is associated with increased autoimmunity as well as an increased susceptibility to infection. The immune system defends the body from foreign, invading organisms, promoting protective immunity and preventing autoimmunity.  The sunlight also enhances our production of feel good hormones such as serotonin, melatonin, endorphins and testosterone.

Studies show that being in nature helps to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. How? The plants and trees take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. We on the other hand, breath in oxygen and breath out carbon dioxide.  So, when we're in nature and around plants and trees, we're getting a cleansing of our lungs and bloodstreams with fresh oxygen from those plants. If you have access to a beach, the saltwater has the effect of also cleansing our lungs as well. Studies have also shown that sounds of nature and the beach are 'hypnotic' and can help people to connect to peace within.

The next time you're outside remember that we (us + nature) are working together to live a long, healthy, life. Enjoy your Vitamin D and make it a point to get outside every single day.
