This is totally dependent on each new mama. The right time to return to intercourse after delivery is when YOU are ready. Many health care providers recommend waiting to have sex until four to six weeks after delivery, regardless of the delivery method. That being said, there are many couples that having sex again up to six months postpartum. It really all depends on how you are feeling emotionally and physically.
The risk of having a complication after delivery is highest during the first two weeks after delivery, but just because you are “cleared” to return to intercourse after 6 weeks, doesn’t mean that every woman is ready on this timeline.
If you are having difficulty with returning to intercourse or experiencing pain with intercourse after delivery, it’s important to start a dialogue with your Ob-Gyn so that you can address the underlying issue. Remember to be patient and kind to yourself. You are adjusting to so many new changes and a life as a new parent - between hormones, sleep deprivation, stress, scheduling, work, your partner, friends and family, and of course caring for your little one. Your mental and physical health both play a role in returning to your sex life.
