There are many factors that play a role in female libido and sex drive. Much of it is emotional and psychological: feeling relaxed, well rested and in a safe space with a supportive partner. However, having balanced hormones is also important. The androgenic or male-flavored hormones including testosterone and DHEA play a significant role in libido and sexual interest.

Yes, women produce testosterone too! Some hormone replacement therapy (HRT) protocols include small doses of testosterone to boost libido during menopause. Estrogen and DHEA vaginal suppositories can also aid in maintaining normal vaginal lubrication.

Here are some natural approaches to boost female libido:

  • Regular exercise and adequate sleep
  • Ayurvedic supplements such as tribulus and ashwagandha
  • Minerals and vitamins including vitamin D, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids

If there is concern that your birth control pills are suppressing your libido, you can consider switching to a different brand with an androgenic form of progesterone. Testosterone and DHEA supplementation should always be used with caution and under medical supervision as excess androgenic hormones can cause acne, hirsutism, hair loss and mood changes.
