In our hectic everyday lives, the one thing that’s more difficult than developing healthy habits is making them stick. That's why following the 21/90 rule helps to make the process more simple.

What is the 21/90 rule? Basically, we believe that it takes 21 days to create a habit and 90 days to make it part of your lifestyle. After you complete the 90 days, the habit will be as much a part of your daily lifestyle as brushing your teeth.

To give you the lowdown, we asked @Dr. Jodie Horton, board certified OB/GYN and Wellness Expert, for some tips to get past 21 days, 90 days, and beyond:

  1. Pick one habit at a time. Focus on doing this habit every day for 21 days. According to Dr. Horton, “I like to start with a small achievable goal that you can commit to for the next 21 days. The next step is to make a plan on how you are going to achieve your goal."
  2. Start out simple to help the habit stick. For example, if you are trying to get into the habit of exercising every day, try committing to 10 minutes of exercise instead of 1 hour. Dr. Horton's advice? “Stay focused, but be patient with yourself. Take one day at a time.”
  3. Keep up the good work! The closer you get to 90 days, the easier maintaining the habit will be. “Once you become consistent with your new habit, use that momentum to make a lifestyle change,” says Dr. Horton.

Throughout your 21/90 journey, the most important thing is to stay positive. It might be daunting at first, but remember that any progress, no matter how small, is good progress and that each day you get one step closer to your goal.

Here’s to developing a healthy lifestyle, one day at a time!
